Blair Bodden submits Zhang Huan

Zhang Huan was born in An Yang City, He Nan Province, China in 1965. Huan attended He Nan University, Kai Feng, China where he received his BA in 1988. Then he went on to pursue his MA at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China in 1993. The images that spoke to me most were Family Tree. These were done almost has a performance piece. Huan invited 3 calligraphers to write text on his face from early in the morning until it got dark. He instructed the calligraphers they should always keep a serious attitude when writing. These calligraphers wrote traditional family stories on his face until he is not recognizable anymore and his face is completely black. Huan makes a comment that more culture is slowly smothering us and turning our faces black. He feels that some mysterious fate surrounds human beings which we can do nothing about or control, it just is. He uses himself in alot of his photographs and in his performance pieces.
