Lauren Pai Submits Nazif Topcuoglu

Nazif Topcuoglu is a photographer from Turkey who is heavily influenced by his art historical background and the gender roles of Turkish women. Conceptually, his work is about time, memory, and loss.

The thing that struck me the most about his work is his play on space and the body, as well as, his composition with subjects in relation to themselves, the space, and the objects. I really enjoy all of the lines he is creating with the body(s) by tangling them and intertwining them together as is it were one person.

The lighting, the positioning of the subjects, and the colors really reflect his art historical background because they look like classical paintings of war or religion.

Because his work portrays young women, books, and surreal fascination, I gathered that his work would be about youth and "coming of age" and about how we learn more about how fleeting and terrible life is, but we can somehow escape it all in our imagination or a book.
