Marcus Connolly Blog 1 -Hiroshi Sugimoto

The first photographer i would like to talk about is Hiroshi Sugimoto. The first photographs which I saw that drew me to him were from his dioram series. This series came into being after he first arrived in New York in 1978 he visited the Natural History Museum where he saw all these obviously very fake dioramas but noticed that "by taking a quick peek with one eye closed, all perspective vanished, and suddenly they looked very real." These were the first photographs i saw from Hiroshi and after seeing these decided to delve more into his work, capturing my interest in other series he did, for example, his lightning field series. with this series Hiroshi was inspired by mankinds curiosity and exploration with electricity beginning pionners like Ben Franklin and Michael Faraday and William Fox Talbot. To make these photographs Hiroshi  discharged electricity through dry photographic plates in an effort to "recreate the major discoveries made of these scientific pionners in the dark room and verify them with my own eyes."
