Autumn Dean/ Louise Bourgeois

Louise Joséphine Bourgeois
Louise was a renowned French artist and sculptor. She was one of the most important artists in modern and contemporary art and known for her spider structures which resulted in her being nicknamed the spiderwoman. Her most well known and largest spider sculpture was called Maman and it has been installed in many locations and sites and museums around the world.
She is thought of as the founder of confessional art. In the late 1940’s, after moving to New York City with her American husband, Robert Goldwater, she turned to sculpture. Though her works are very abstract, they do often suggest the human figure and how if it could show its inner feelings  would show things like anxiety and lonesomeness. She herself was a dark and somewhat troubled woman. She had several childhood problems and traumas and for this she has trust issues that come out in her work.
Her cage like installations show the setup of ambiguous scenes perhaps ones from memories of her childhood they are usually made of rock and steel and very heavy elements. This may be to back how heavy some of her memories are.
